Calcutta nr. 81 *
I drink wine, & the critics from left & right
Say:— “Do not drink wine, for it is the foe of religion”
When I knew that wine was the foe of religion
(I said) “By Allah ! let me drink the foe’s blood, for that is lawful.
I drink wine, and my enemies from left and right
say: — "Do not drink wine, for it is the foe of religion."
When I knew that wine was the foe of religion,
I said: —"By Allah! let me drink the foe's blood, for that is lawful."
I drink wine, and my opponents from left and right
say: "Do not drink wine, for it is the foe of faith."
Now that I know that wine is the foe of faith, by Allah!
I will drink the blood of the foe, for that is lawful.
I 'm a drinker of wine and I drink in the railers' despite
Who cry "Drink it not; 't is the foe of the faith!" day and night.
Since I know, then, for certain that wine is the foe of the faith.
By Allah, I'll drink the foe's blood, as is lawful and right!
I quaff wine and from right and left come those
Who say, “Drink not wine which doth Faith oppose."
By Allah! since I know Faith's foe is wine,
'T is right that I should drink the blood of foes!
