Calcutta nr. 103
Now that the rose of happiness is in flower
Why is your hand idle with the wine-cup
Drink wine for Time is a perfidious enemy
It is difficult to know many such days
And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before
The Tavern shouted--"Open then the Door!
"You know how little while we have to stay,
"And, once departed, may return no more."
Pourquoi, aujourd'hui que la rose de ta fortune porte ses fruits, la coupe est-elle absente de ta main? Bois du vin, ami, bois, car le temps est un ennemi implacable, et retrouver un jour pareil est chose difficile.
Now the rose of fair fortune for thee in full flower is,
Why hold from the winecup, whilst mirth in thy power is?
Drink; for Fortune a foeman perfidious and dour is,
And uneath to reconquer the like of this hour is.
Now that Joy's roses fairest bloom attain.
Why from the cup your idle hand restrain?
Drink wine, since Time is a perfidious foe.
It were hard finding such a day again.
