Calcutta nr. 235
In the beginning to my surprise he brought me into existence
What do I gain from life save my amazement at it
We come to the end of it & do not know what was
The purpose of this coming & going & being.
Into this Universe, and Why not knowing
Nor Whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing;
And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,
I know not Whither, willy-nilly blowing.
He first brought me in confusion into existence,
What do I gain from my life save my amazement at it?
We went away against our will, and we know not what was
The purpose of this coming, and going, and being.
D'abord, il m'a donné l'être sans mon assentiment, ce qui fait que ma propre existence me jette dans la stupéfaction. Ensuite, nous quittons ce monde à regret et sans y avoir compris le but de notre venue, de notre halte, de notre départ.
Me erst, willy nilly, to being He brought
Nor by life, save amaze, to me added hath aught:
With regret we depart and of that which is sought
By our coming and being and going know nought.
He first in weakness me to being brought,
And save amaze to life hath added aught;
Unwilling we depart, and whence is this
Our coming, being, going, we know naught.
