If I had power over the sky like God
Would I not consider this heaven from the centre
Would I not so construct another sky from the beginning
Which should easily be excellent according to the heart’s desire
Ah Love! could you and I with Him conspire
To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,
Would not we shatter it to bits--and then
Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!
Had I, like God, control of the heavens,
Would I not do away with the heavens altogether,
Would I not so construct another heaven from the beginning
That, being free, one might attain to the heart's desire?
Si je possédais sur les cieux la puissance que Dieu y exerce, je les supprimerais de ce monde, et j'en construirais d'autres à ma façon, afin que l'homme libre pût ici-bas atteindre sans difficulté les désirs de son cœur.
Might I God's power o'er the universe acquire,
I'd do away with yon firmament entire
And a bran-new heaven I'd fashion me on such wise
That the righteous should eath attain his heart's desire.
If I o'er Heaven should Godlike power acquire,
I 'd sweep away this firmament entire,
Another such, from that new Heaven I 'd make.
So the freed soul might reach its high desire.
