Since the world came not to pass at the will of a wise man
The heavens are seven in number if you, or, if you like, eight,
Since you must die, & all things that must be are (fixed)
What dust it must swallow in the tomb, & what wolf in the wilderness
Payne 1898 - 197
Since never the Sphere yet turned as a wise man would,
What boots it seven heavens to reckon, and eight, what good?
Since all thy desires and endeavours are death-ensued,
As well be the ant in the sand as the wolf in the wood!
Thompson 1906 - 686
Since ne'er the Sphere turned as the sage is fain.
Would you the seven Heavens or the eight explain?
Since Death comes, wishes unfulfilled, as well
Devoured by ants in tomb as wolf on plain!
