Calcutta nr. 107 *

I know not whether he who fashioned me
Made an inhabitant of pleasant heaven or of dreadful hell;
(But) a wine cup & an idol & a lute upon the green bank of the field
All these three are cash to me, be thine the credit-heaven !

Ouseley MS 140 - 40
I know not whether he who fashioned me
appointed me to dwell in heaven or in dreadful hell,
but some food, and an adored one, and wine, upon the green bank of a field—
all these three are cash to me: thine be the credit-heaven!

Christensen 1927 - 55
I know not whether He who moulded me has pre-
destined me to be one of the people of Paradise or a dweller of hideous Hell.
A meal, an idol, and wine on the bank of the field, these
three are cash to me; thine be an order for Paradise.

Heron-Allen 1899 - 13d
I know not whether he who fashioned me
Appointed me to dwell in heaven or in dreadful hell
(But) some food, and an adored one, and wine upon the green bank of a field—
All these three are present cash to me : thine be the promised heaven!

Nicolas 1867 - 92

Payne 1898 - 89
No whit I know, not I, if He who mixed my clay
Made me for Hell or Heaven; but, be that as it may,
Give me but wine and wench and lute in hand to-day,
By the stream-side, and pocket thyself Heav'n's promise-to-pay.

Thompson 1906 - 142
I know not whether Allah fashioned me
For Heaven or in a horrid Hell to be;
Cup, lute and loved one by the garden side,
All three my cash. Heaven's credit then for thee!

Whinfield 1883 - 94
Did He who made me fashion me for hell,
Or destine me for heaven? I can not tell.
Yet will I not renounce cup, lute, and love,
Nor earthly cash for heavenly credit sell.
