Calcutta nr. 145

Whenever the rising of the false dawn happens
The bright goblet must be in your hand
They say in the rumour that truth is acrid
According to this director wine must be the Truth.

FitzGerald 1879 - 2
Before the phantom of False morning died,
Methought a Voice within the Tavern cried,
"When all the Temple is prepared within,
"Why nods the drowsy Worshipper outside?"

Nicolas 1867 - 185
Lorsque l'aurore d'azur se montrera, aie dans ta main la coupe étincelante. On dit que la vérité est amère dans la bouche des humains. C'est une raison plausible pour que le vin soit cette vérité même.

Payne 1898 - 286
What time that the blue dawn breaketh on day to be,
With winecup in hand it behoveth thee aye to be:
They tell us that truth is bitter in mouths of men,
And wine by this token the truth we may say to be.

Thompson 1906 - 250
What time the rising dawn's blue light doth shine.
Your hand should grasp the goblet of pure wine;
They say the truth tastes bitter in the mouth.
It must be ''Truth" is wine then, by this sign.

Whinfield 1883 - 200
When false dawn streaks the east with cold, gray line,
Pour in your cups the pure blood of the vine;
The truth, they say, tastes bitter in the mouth,
This is a token that the "Truth" is wine.
