Calcutta nr. 178

How long will my life pass by in self examination
Or in footsteps in search of existence or non existence
Drink wine for lives that are thus on that track
It is better that it shall pass in sleep or drunkenness

FitzGerald 1879 - 54
Waste not your Hour, nor in the vain pursuit
Of This and That endeavour and dispute;
Better be jocund with the fruitful Grape
Than sadden after none, or bitter, Fruit.

Nicolas 1867 - 165

Payne 1898 - 295
Thy life, how long in self-adorement will it pass?
In quest of IS, IS NOT, say, wilt thou still it pass?
Drink, for a life, that's dogged with care and doom, 'twere best
In drunkenness or sleep, for lesser ill, it pass.

Thompson 1906 - 231
Why will you life in self-adorement spend,
Or “Is" and "Is not" strive to comprehend?
Drink ! since Death presses at Life's heels, ’t is best
In dreams or drink it pass on to the end.

Winfield 1883 - 183
Why spend life in vainglorious essay
All Being and Not-being to survey?
Since Death is ever pressing at your heels,
'Tis best to drink or dream your life away.
