Nr. 185

Calcutta nr. 185

All my agreeable friends have gone away
In the footsteps of fate one by one they are destroyed
In the fellowship of souls they were cup-companions
Two little existences before me they were drunk

FitzGerald 1879 - 22
For some we loved, the loveliest and the best
That from his Vintage rolling Time hath prest,
Have drunk their Cup a Round or two before,
And one by one crept silently to rest.

Heron-Allen 1899 - 22
All my sympathetic friends have left me,
One by one they have sunk low at the foot of Death.
In the fellowship of souls they were cup-companions,
A turn or two before me they became drunk.

Payne 1898 - 379
Our comrades all from hand are long ago become;
Yea, in the track of doom, they're all laid low become:
One wine with us they drank at it life its feast and drunk,
A turn or two ere we, they have, heigho! become.

Thompson 1906 - 267
All our dear friends have from our handclasp gone,
Beneath the foot of Death fall'n one by one;
They drank with us two or three rounds before
At Life's feast and enrapt lie overthrown.

Winfield 1883 - 219
My comrades are all gone; Death, deadly foe,
Has caught them one by one, and trampled low;
They shared life's feast, and drank its wine with me,
But lost their heads, and dropped a while ago.
