Bodleian quatrain nr. 48
Cadell 1899 - 80
Some men there be, who quaff pure wine alway;
Some in prayer's places night-long vigils keep;
They all in water splash, no, none live dry,
And if one wakes, the rest are all asleep.
Grolleau 1902 - 48
De ceux qui tirent le pur vin de dattes,
Et de ceux qui passent la nuit en prières,
Pas un n'est sur un terrain solide, tous se noient.
Il en est Un qui veille, les autres sont endormis.
Heron-Allen 1898 - 48
Of those who draw the pure date wine
and those who spend the night in prayer,
not one is on the dry land, all are in the water.
One is awake: the others are asleep.
Payne 1898 - 290
Those who of sheer old wine unmingled drinkers deep are,
And those who still a-nights in the e prayer-niche watch-a-keep are,
Not one is on dry land ; i' the water all a-heap are;
But one of them 's awake, whilst t' others all asleep are.
Payne 1898 - 237
Since life still passeth by, what matters sweet or sour?
When the soul 's at the lip, what 's Balkh? what 's Nishapour?
Drink wine, for, after me and thee, full many a moon
Upon the world, from new to full, its light wil! pour.
Von der Porten 1927 - 48
Wer seinen süßen Dattelwein genießt,
Vor dem Mihrâb die ganzen Nächte büßt,
Steckt tief im Sumpf, ihm winkt kein trockner Pfad,
Gott wacht, der Schlaf die anderen umschließt.
Roe 1906 - 82
And we who love to drain the flagon deep,
And ye who pray and nightly vigils keep,
We neither know, we both are cast adrift;
But One, He knows; the rest are fast asleep.
Talbot 1908 - 48
For, those who from the date its vintage take,
And they who all night long devotions make,
All are submerg'd, not one remains on Earth,
All are asleep: One only is awake.
Thompson 1906 - 269
Those joyous ones who of old wine drink deep.
And they who in the prayer-niche vigil keep,
Not one is on dry land, but all at sea,
ONE only wakes, the others are asleep!
Tirtha 1941 - X.20
Some boosers pull their pure and sober wine,
Some watch at nights in niches of their shrine;
But both are drowned in undercurrent flows,
The One alone awakes, the rest supine.
Whinfield 1883 - 222
The joyous souls who quaff potations deep,
And saints who in the mosques sad vigils keep,
Are lost at sea alike, and find no shore,
ONE only wakes, all others are asleep.
- WHINFIELD 1882 - 119
