Nr. 2

Calcutta nr. 2

From ruby wine our nature became ruby-coloured
Out goblet comes away from our hands with lamentation
From the quantity that we drink on the top of other draughts
We find ourself is steeped in wine & our heads are full of it.

Payne 1898 -12
Wine's ruby's the jewel become of this soul of mine;
No breath but with grief the goblet I resign:
For the oceans of wine on the top of wine I 've drunk,
A-top o' me 's wine and I on the top of wine.

Thompson 1906 - 693
Pure ruby wine 's the jewel of our soul,
With loud lament we put aside the bowl,
For so much wine 's atop the wine we 've drunk.
We 're over wine and yet in wine's control!
