Calcutta nr. 36

I have travelled far in a wandering by valley & desert
It came to pass that I wandered in all quarters of the world
I have not heard from anyone who came from this road
The road he has travelled any traveller travels again.

FitzGerald 1879 - 64
Strange, is it not ? that of the myriads who
Before us pass'd the door of Darkness through,
Not one returns to tell us of the Road,
Which to discover we must travel too.

Heron-Allen 1899 - 64a
I have travelled far in a wandering by valley and desert.
It came to pass I wandered in all quarters of the world,
I have not heard from anyone who came from that road.
The road he has travelled, no traveller travels again.

Payne 1898 - 56
Many a valley we 've traversed and many a plain;
The world, east and west, we have travelled amain;
But of none have we heard who came back from this way;
'T is a road that no traveller returneth again.

Thompson 1906 - 178
We’ve traversed many a vale and desert plain,
And did all quarters of the world attain;
But heard of none who came this road, the way
The traveller goes, he comes not back again.

Whinfield 1883 - 129
Full many a hill and vale I journeyed o'er;
Yea, journeyed through the world's wide quarters four,
But never heard of pilgrim who returned;
When once they go, they go to come no more.
