Place wine in my hand for my heart is light
And this fugitive existence has feet like quicksilver.
Arise ! for the wakefulness of good-fortune turns to slumber,
Know thou that the fire of youth is (fugitive) like water

FitzGerald 1879 - 63
Oh threats of Hell and Hopes of Paradise!
One thing at least is certain--This Life flies;
One thing is certain and the rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown for ever dies.

Heron-Allen 1899 - 51b
Place wine in my hand for my heart is aglow,
And this fleet-footed existence is like quicksilver.
Arise ! for the wakefulness of good fortune turns to slumber ;
Know thou that the fire of youth is (fugitive) like water.

Nicolas 1867 - 54

Payne 1898 - 62
Set wine on my palm, for my heart in fever-heat is;
Like quicksilver this our life unstable of feet is;
Awake, for the favour' of fortune a dream and a cheat is
Up, up, for the fire of youth as water fleet is!

Thompson 1906 - 99
Set wine in my hand for my heart 's ahght,
For swift as quicksilver this life takes flight;
Know that youth's fire as water is, arise!
For Fortune's waking is a dream of night!

Whinfield 1883 - 57
Bring wine! my heart with dancing spirits teems,
Wake! fortune's waking is as fleeting dreams;
Quicksilver-like our days are swift of foot,
And youthful fire subsides as torrent streams.
