Calcutta nr. 44

All verdure that grows upon the margin of a stream
You may say grows from the lip of an angel
Beware not to set foot contemptuously upon the verdure
For that verdure grows from the clay of a tulip cheeked one.

Christensen 1927 - 81
All that green-sward which grows on the bank of the
rivulet has grown, as it were, on the lip of a beeing of
angelic nature.
Put not thy foot on the grass in contempt, for that
grass has grown from the dust of a moon-face.

FitzGerald 1879 - 20
And this reviving Herb whose tender Green
Fledges the River-Lip on which we lean--
Ah, lean upon it lightly! for who knows
From what once lovely Lip it springs unseen!

Heron-Allen 1899 - 20
All verdure that grows upon the margin of a stream,
You may say, grows from the lip of one angel-natured;
Beware not to set foot contemptuously upon the verdure,
For that verdure grows from the clay of one tulip-cheeked.

Nicolas 1867 - 59

Payne 1898 - 61
Each bladelet of grass on the bank of the stream't hath sprouted,
From the lip of some angel-fair one, 't would seem,'t hath sprouted:
Beware lest on aught of the greensward in scorn thou trample;
From the dust of some tulip-cheek, I deem, 't hath sprouted.

Thompson 1906 - 104
Each tuft of green the river brims display.
As down on angel's lip doth grow, you'd say;
Ah, trample not this turf! for every blade
Springs from some lovely tulip-cheeked one's clay!

Whinfield 1883 - 62
Yon turf, fringing the margent of the stream,
As down upon a cherub's lip might seem,
Or growth from dust of buried tulip cheeks;
Tread not that turf with scorn, or light esteem.
