Calcutta nr. 293

It is a cup that produces excellent wisdom
And of its beauty gives 100 kisses on the brow
This Potter of the World so many charming cups
Makes & again strikes them to the ground.

FitzGerald 1879 - 85
Then said a Second--"Ne'er a peevish Boy
"Would break the Bowl from which he drank in joy;
"And He that with his hand the Vessel made
"Will surely not in after Wrath destroy."

Heron-Allen 1899 - 84
There is a cup which wisdom loud acclaims,
And for its beauty gives it a hundred kisses on the brow,
Such a sweet cup, this Potter of the World
Makes, and then shatters it upon the ground.

Payne 1898 - 495
There's a cup that a-shape Creative Reason setteth it,
And kisses of love on its front, great foison, setteth It:
But yon Potter of Time, if a goodly cup It fashion,
Still crash on the ground all out of season setteth it.

Thompson 1906 - 336
There is a cup Creative Wisdom makes,
That from Love's care a hundred graces takes;
Yet this frail urn the Potter of the world
So shapes,—then on the ground in pieces breaks!

Whinfield 1883 - 290
There is a chalice made with wit profound,
With tokens of the Maker's favor crowned;
Yet the world's Potter takes his masterpiece,
And dashes it to pieces on the ground!
