Bodleian quatrain nr. 44

Cadell 1899 - 44
Be ye then bold, for fate doth sorrow yield,
Sit not at ease, the sword of time is keen;
If fortune place some sweet your lips between,
Beware! Eat not! Poison is there concealed.

Sois prudent: la fortune est incertaine;
Prends garde: le glaive du destin est acéré.
Si le sort te met des amandes douces dans la bouche,
Ne les avale pas; du poison s'y mélange.

Heron-Allen 1898 - 44
Be prudent, for the means of life are uncertain;
take heed, for the sword of destiny is keen.
If fortune place almond-sweets in thy very mouth,
beware! swallow them not, for poison is mingled therein.

De Marthold 1910 - 44
Sois prudent: la fortune est incertaine et change;
Prends garde: le destin au fer tranchant se venge;

Rosen 1928 - 75
Beware, for the world is full of spite,
Trust it not, for the blade of fate is sharp.
If Destiny should place a lozenge in your mouth,
Beware, swallow it not, for it is mixed with poison.

Be wise: thou canst not see what Fate portends;
Be arm'd against the sharpened sword she sends;
Feast not upon the sweets she offers thee,
For poison with the sugar oft she blends.

See that the false world doth not thee ensnare.
Sit not secure ! Fate's sword is sharp, take care!
If Fortune drop a sweetmeat in thy mouth.
Swallow it not, 'tis poison mixed, beware!

His flourishing sword is sharp besmeared with,gore.
The kissing conifit which a siren gives
Is soaked in poison, eats you in the core.

Dame Fortune's smiles are full of guile, beware!
Her scimitar is sharp to smite, take care!
If e'er she drop a sweetmeat in thy mouth,
'Tis poisonous, - to swallow it forbear!
