He who established the earth & the sky & the heavens
Many are the scars which he has inflicted upon disconsolate hearts
Many the ruby lips, & musk-scented curls
That he has cast into the drum of earth, & the coffin of the clay.
Christensen 1927 - 95
He who built the earth and the sky and [all] the heavens.
with how many a brand did He mark the sorrowful hearts!
Many a ruby lip and many a musky lock did He hide
in the [hollow] drum of earth and the box of dust.
FitzGerald 1879 - 20
And this reviving Herb whose tender Green
Fledges the River-Lip on which we lean--
Ah, lean upon it lightly! for who knows
From what once lovely Lip it springs unseen!
Nicolas 1867 - 107
Payne 1898 - 241
He who the bases of earth and sky hath set
Full many a brand on hearts that sigh hath set;
O many's the lip like ruby and tress like musk
That He in the round earth's coffer to lie hath set!
Thompson 1906 - 184
He who earth, sky and heaven did array.
Full many a scar on grieving hearts doth lay.
And many a ruby lip and musky tress
Hath buried in earth's treasure chest of clay.
Whinfield 1883 - 137
He, who the world's foundations erst did lay,
Doth bruise full many a bosom day by day,
And many a ruby lip and musky tress
Doth coffin in the earth, and shroud with clay.
