In a state of drunkenness I passed by the wine-house
last night. I saw an old man drunk and with a jar on his shoulder.
I said; "Art thou not ashamed before God, o old man?"
He said: "Mercy comes from God, drink wine and be silent."

Came shining through the Dusk an Angel Shape
Bearing a Vessel on his Shoulder; and
He bid me taste of it; and 'twas the Grape!

Drunk and pitcher a-back, an old man I espied:
"Ho, gaffer!" quoth I, "hast no shame before God?"
"God the Bountiful is; go, drink wine!" he replied.
