Nr. 298
Calcutta nr. 298
The time of youth is past & all its cavalcade & retinue
Life is bitter to me but wine is its hoped for thing
This stature is as if my arrow became bent like a bow
Of my members I have made a cord & I draw it tighter
Payne 1898 - 502
Youth is gone, horse and foot, and this body of mine
Like the arc is become, that was once as the sine:
Life is bitter to me and its essence is wine;
Wine and women adieu have I bidden. in fine.
Thompson 1906 - 756
Youth has gone, horse and foot, and now to me
Life bitter is, though that wine 's essence be,
This body once as arrow straight is bent
As bow I Ve strung with staff drawn joyously.
