Rosen editions

Friedrich Rosen published a number of translations of the Rubáiyát as Die Sinnsprüche Omars des Zeltmachers = Rubaijat-I-Omar-I-Khajjam. The first version, containing 93 verses, numbered from I to XCIII, appeared in 1909, published by Deutsche Verlagsanstalt, Stuttgart/Berlin. There were five sections – ‘Vergänglichkeit’ with 27 quatrains, ‘Welträtsel’ with 18 quatrains, ‘Lehre’ with 28 quatrains, ‘Wein und Liebe’ with 18 quatrains, and ‘Schlussworte’ with two quatrains.

In 1912 he brought out a second edition of 124 verses, also numbered with roman numerals. 31 of these quatrains were new. There were eight new quatrains in section one, one new quatrain in the second section, thirteen new quatrains in the third section, nine new quatrains in the fourth section and the last section was unchanged.

In 1914 Rosen published a limited edition of 300 copies, with 125 quatrains, not divided into sections.
Seven quatrains were omitted from the 124 quatrains in the 1912 edition (nrs. XXIII, XLIX, LVII, LXIX, LXXXVI, CI and CXIII). Number XXVIII was placed much later in the sequence (at what would be number C. There were eight new quatrains added. These would also appear in tht 1919 edition as numbers 9, 71, 109, 108, 64, 122, 144 and 147.

A third edition was published in 1919 with 152 quatrains. These were numbered with Arabic numerals and the five sections in the first two editions were retained. To the 124 quatrains of the 1912 edition were added 28 new quatrains. There were three new ones in the first section, one new one in the second section, fifteen new quatrains in the third section, nine new quatrains in the fourth section, and the last section was unchanged.

A fourth edition, published in 1921, was essentially the same as the third edition. This edition was reprinted in 1922. All these editions were published by Deutsche Verlangsanstalt.

In the introduction to these volumes Rosen explained that a little manuscript of the quatrains accompanied him on his travels in the Middle-East and Persia, but unfortunately he gave no further details about this text and its origins.

In 1929 the Insel-Verlag first published a popular edition of these translated verses in German, in the Insel-Bücherei series, No. 407 and this version continues to be issued until the present day. These editions all follow the latest version of 1922, containing 152 verses. In some editions however the foreword and introductions were printed in a different order.

In 1925 F. Rosen published a new series of quatrains in Persian, based on an old manuscript that Rosen had discovered in a private collection. This was followed in 1928 in an edition containing the Persian text with an English translation, with an addition of quatrains that were found in two manuscript fragments, one of which predates the famous Bodleian manuscript by 124 years.
In 1930 yet another edition of Rosen’s English translations appeared, published in New York by Dutton & Co.
