Tahrir-Iran 1955 - I

Tahrir Iran, 1955. Covers

THE QUATRAINS OF ABOLFAT'H GHIA'TH-E-DIN EBRAHIM KHAYAM OF NISHABUR. Tehran, Tahir Co., 1955.

This is the first of a number of polyglot publications from Iran, as discussed in the survey article in Persica. The edition has 78 quatrains, most of which are shown in Persian, Arabic, English, French, German. It is illustrated with 78 colour illustrations by Akbar Tajvidi. Below each English and French quatrain, the names of FitzGerald and E’tessam-Zadeh respectively are shown, whereas the German quatrains appear anonymously. Although the French and German translations are parallel in meaning to FitzGerald’s quatrains, they are not translations thereof.

This table shows the quatrains selected from Edward FitzGerald's translation (1859) as they appear in this volume. Three quatrains appear twice: nrs. 25 (= 76), 35 (= 67) and 58 (= 68)

Number of quatrains:
FitzGerald (1859) - 78

The French quatrains are mostly taken from A. E’tessam-Zadeh’s translation, published in 1931. 69 quatrains from this edition can be identified; two quatrains appear twice: number 25 = 76, and number 35 = 67.
The explanation for the remaining nine quatrains is that E’tessam-Zadeh “translated for us a number of such quatrains in the FitzGerald’s for which French translations were lacking” (From the pubisher's foreword). These quatrains are the numbers
